Is love a main theme in 'The Great Gatsby'?

Love.. What is love? How do you define the term 'LOVE' is it a feeling? Is it made up or is it real?! That is the question!

I have read a few chapters of 'The Great Gatsby' and I have watched the film, which I enjoyed so  much! In the film/ novel there are relationships, some old and are meant to be 'forgotten' but arent. Obvioulsy I am talking about Gatsby and Daisy, they have a long awaited relationship that is very intense and full of emotion. The only problem is Daisy is married to Tom.. This is a tough situation!

But what Daisy doesn't know is, Tom- her husband, has a Mistress, Myrtle! There are a lot of secrets revealed in The Great Gatsby that only the audience knows of. Such as when James and Daisy have time alone, how they first meet, which was an amazing set up!

The way Daisy is presented in this image has a worried feel to it, she looks nervous and scared, Gatsby has a serious facial expression on his face. He is presented as very protective over Daisy and this image also demonstrates the passion they hold between eachother.

Tom looks more intrigued in Myrtles relationship rather than Daisy's, as he seems more loving towards Myrtle. Tom obviously doesn't want Daisy to be with Gatsby, but wants to be with both, Myrtle and Daisy.. Does he love both? One of them, or neither of them.

Gatsby and Daisy clearly love eachother in a different way that Tom 'loves' Daisy, as soon as Gatsby and Daisy are in the same scene, everything gets fiery! There love lasted over the time that they were not in conctact with eachother. I think Daisy only married Tom because she thought she has saw the last of Gatsby. Gatsby knew where she was, and always kept a tab to where she is. That is pure love!

  1. Thanks G! This is a thoughtful piece of writing which explores many questions which are central to the novel and the point you make about the different kinds of love that Fitzgerald presents is an important one.

I think it is important to consider what Fitzgerald is saying about love. At the start of your post you question the nature of love, whether love is real or not. What do you think Fitzgerald’s view would be?

It is also useful to ask this question of the characters in the novel. What is Tom’s view of love? Nick’s? Daisy’s? Jordan’s? You describe Gatsby’s love for Daisy as ‘pure love’ and I’m sure most readers would agree with you, but is anyone else’s love ‘pure’, or are the other characters, like Nick, ‘full of interior rules that act as brakes’ on their ‘desires’ and emotions?

    Thoughts below please.

Finally, please check your work carefully for accuracy. Can you correct a couple of things?

Firstly: use apostrophes for missing letters (e.g. are not = aren’t – 2nd paragraph); and also to show possession (e.g. Myrtle’s relationship – penultimate paragraph).
Secondly: check there/their. In the last paragraph it should read ‘Their love…’

    Please correct and update.

    Thanks G.
